Why plant a tree? Why dedicate a tree to intergenerational bonds? The first question is short and simple but the list of benefits is great. Below you will find a brief list of reasons to plant a tree. There are reasons for every viewpoint so the question "Why plant a tree?" should be "When and where can I plant a tree?". The Children & Elders Forest program brings intergeneral teams that provides personal bond as well as a multigenerational gift to the communities that choose to plant Children & Elders Groves. For more information about the benefits of planting trees please visit our resources page.

Economic

  • Trees enhance community economic stability by attracting businesses and tourists.
  • People linger and shop longer along tree-lined streets.
  • Apartments and offices in wooded areas rent more quickly, have higher occupancy rate and tenants stay longer.
  • Businesses leasing office space in wooded developments find their workers are more productive and absenteeism is reduced.
  • Trees can add up to 15 percent to residential property value.
  • Office and industrial space in a wooded setting is in more demand and is more valuable to sell or rent.

Environmental

  • Trees reduce air pollution and they help to settle out, trap, and hold particle pollutants such as dust, ash, pollen and smoke, that can damage lungs.
  • Absorb enough CO2 on each acre, over a years time, to equal the amount you produce when you drive your car 26,000 miles.
  • Trees act as a carbon sink by removing the carbon from the CO2 and storing it as cellulose in the trunk while releasing the oxygen back into the air
  • Trees also shade our homes and office buildings. This reduces air conditioning needs up to 30 percent.
  • Trees as shade for hard surfaces such as driveways, patios, and sidewalks will minimize landscape heat load ,lower air temperature through shading, increase humidity in dry climates through evaporation of moisture and provide a wind break.
  • Trees create local ecosystems that provide habitat and food for birds and animals.

Aesthetic

  • Trees bring a reminder of the natural world that sometimes seems filled with concrete and steel.
  • Trees planted in groves creates a special place to escape the noise of a community
  • Trees can be a focus of contemplation that relaxs one's mind in a busy world
  • Trees planted in memorial creates ties between generations

"The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all ridicule and deformity, and some scarce see Nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, Nature is Imagination itself."

William Blake, 1799, The Letters
